You may have heard that Hill’s voluntarily recalled some selected canned dog foods at the beginning of this year due to elevated levels of Vitamin D. We were just informed that Hill’s is expanding the voluntary recalled of canned foods relating to the January 31st recall. The expanded recall affects only Hill’s Prescription Diet and Hill’s Science Diet canned foods. No dry foods, cat foods or treats are affected. Ingestion of elevated levels of Vitamin D can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of Vitamin D and the length of exposure. Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit signs such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, weight loss and joint issues. Vitamin D that is consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs, including renal dysfunction.
